Thiruvananthapuram: BJP leader R Sreelekha has resigned as a councillor of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, citing personal reasons. Her resignation comes as a setback to the BJP, which governs the civic body with a one-seat majority.

The BJP won 50 of the 101 wards in the last local body elections and came to power with the support of independent councillor Pattoor Radhakrishnan.

Sreelekha was elected from the Sasthamangalam division in the 2024 local body elections and had been projected as a potential mayoral candidate. However, after the BJP assumed power in the corporation, it appointed V V Rajesh as mayor.

Sreelekha had publicly expressed her dissatisfaction over not being considered for the mayor's post.
